Long Day

Yesterday was a long day.

I tried very hard to go to sleep early, even taking some melatonin to try and ease that path, unfortunately, however I kept waking up on the hour, worried I was going to be late working the polls. In all, I had about 2 and a half hours of sleep to keep me going. Needless to say I wasn’t excited about that prospect. I was up at 2, with my alarm set to go off at 3 so there wasn’t much point in rolling back over. I reported to the polling station at 4:45 am, and away we went.

The day moved quickly early, getting the tables set up, measuring 6 feet apart so everyone could social distance, the doors opened at 6. I have worked in retail for many years, and more Black Friday’s than I care to admit, but holy moly. Lines for each precinct, lines for the electronic voting machines, lines to fill it out in paper. We were slammed for over two hours, and then it started to slow. By the afternoon it was a trickle and we were entertaining ourselves. The polls shut down at 7 and after a quick cleanup we were out the door.

And then, the worst possible thing. I couldn’t sleep. For hours I tossed and turned, frustrated with myself. I tortured myself by checking out social media and looking for early election results and then cussing at the results they gave me. Finally I crashed, and slept almost like the dead for about 6 hours. I didn’t move from the position I initially dropped off in and amazingly my hair still somehow gave bedhead a new goal to reach. I ran my head under the shower just in time to be somewhat upright and presentable for the maintenance guy to come and try and fix my Nest, (he tried valiantly, but it didn’t quite work) as well as be awake for my interview at 10 am. Which never occurred. So frustrated. We worked 3 different days to come up with a time that works for everyone, and sure enough, no call and no response to the email I sent inquiring if I got the time wrong.

After discovering the fix did not work for the Nest, I finally went on the website to see if I could get some help. The problem is that the battery keeps running down and the system is not recharging it. After much back and forth, we’ve (they told me to) decided to pull the system off the WIFI for 24 hours to see if that is what is draining the battery. On the brand new replacement system I just purchased. I’m so very frustrated.

So, to combat that frustration, I had lunch, working through the food I anxiety-made last week. I’m really happy with this batch of chili!

Chorizo and ground turkey, cans of black beans, green chilis, garlic, cumin, smoked chili powder, yellow and orange bell pepper, some spicy barbeque sauce, along with Rotel, and cans of tomato sauce. I browned the chorizo first, but let the turkey cook in the crockpot along with the rest of the ingredients because I knew there were be less grease left over from the turkey. Not too spicy, and it has great flavor.

I have another interview tomorrow, this time for a tutor position. So, tonight I’m going to climb back in bed, binge read Sin & Chocolate, by one of my favorite authors, K.F. Breene, have some decadent salted caramel hot chocolate, and snuggle in my blankets.
