Bear comes home

Bear comes home

In a bout of thoughtful impulsiveness? Is that a thing? I finally went to the Humane Society to look at a dog, to see if I could add to the household. The intent was methodical. My plan was to go and see who was hanging out at the shelter, see if I vibed with any of the animals and then go home and sleep on it.

That was the plan. It was a good plan. Not impulsive. This way I wouldn’t walk out with a 140lb lovable never ending hunger pit like the last time.

I felt strong in my convictions. Empowered. I had dogs bookmarked on my phone from their website and then I went in.

While it wasn’t chaos, it was a harried group of people, both paid and volunteers doing the best that they could while being short staffed. The first crimp in my plan was that I was only allowed to see two of the four dogs I had bookmarked. Which meant I needed to walk into the room where they were all hanging out in their individual cages, and determine by glance if we would be a fit.

What was meant to be a quick reconnaissance trip ended up being a 3 hour tour where I checked out two different pups, one just over a year old and the other at a guess around 7. While both held so much appeal, I ended up taking home the seven year old stray that lived a hard life scavenging on the mean streets. He is a love bug, but scared of loud cars, UPS trucks, sketchy looking people just hanging out in cars and ceiling fans. I have no idea about the last one. He is getting used to living in a home, not having to go through garbage to find food and what words mean. It will be a process.

Meanwhile RIP all my shirts that didn’t used to have dog slobber on them at the end of the day.
