I’m beginning the process of packing up my apartment to move to the new place. It never ceases to amaze me how much stuff you can accumulate while doing your day to day. Not to say that everyone does gather stuff, but it seems to be so easy to just turn around and have things. And while, it may make sense to purchase, pick up or be given random things throughout the years, it doesn’t seem to make it easier when you need to box it up to be moved. And forget finding a spot in the new place for it.
It also never ceases to amaze me how differently people will see how to set up a house. The new place I’m moving to has amazing storage in the kitchen, but next to nothing in the bedrooms or bathrooms. It is so easy to transfer the aspects of how you live your life and transfer them to whatever project you are working on, including the rehabbing of a house. I can only assume that the person who designed the different rooms of the house has a definite need for kitchen storage, and saw on some influencer’s website that the kitchen was extremely important, but never bothered to look at rooms around that. The closets upstairs, for example are sparse at best and will have to be worked around to be usable. That, however, is for me, perhaps someone else wouldn’t use a closet for all that and prefers a chest of drawers. Those pesky details though, while they may have done a great deal of work in taking what was a duplex and converting it back to a single family home, it seems they got distracted by the details at the end and missed some important pieces, like setting up the closets with a an acceptable space to hang shirts.
The little details aren’t just on the rehabbers side of points to miss. I have a person I’m supposed to have come out and set up a carport for the little space I have off the alley in the back. I drove by the house yesterday, and realized that the concrete isn’t in the best of shape, and that there are at least 2 different tree stumps that may need to be removed before they can put the carport in. What I thought would be one price for all this work could easily double but I will have to make allowances for what needs to be done so I can feel more comfortable with where I will be parking my car. However, I won’t know until I meet up with this person and they walk the space.

I’m going to be taking several days off just to get things in the new place, or meet up with contractors. Reworking my idea for budget on the fly, but unable to get a final number just yet as there are still moving pieces on the board. But I still want to get started. So I will work on purchasing what I need for the raised garden beds I am looking forward to working in. Getting the fruit trees planted that I know I won’t be able to enjoy for a couple of years, contacting the composting company so I can fill the garden beds and surrounding areas with the good stuff. Perhaps getting pavers for the spaces in the back to move around in. Think about getting a basic smoker so I can finally finally try my hand at smoking pork belly. Get some storage shelves in the basement for the potatoes and sweet potatoes I anticipate pulling out of the garden at the end of the year. Think about veggies and freezing what I grow. Yet paying close enough attention to the details to realize I may not harvest a lot this season so I need to be thankful for the opportunity for next year.
And maybe it is finally time to get rid of the giant couch I’ve had forever. Is there anything wrong with it? No, but I’ve had it forever and it may not even fit in the space. Details though, if I get rid of it, do I really want to spend the money to get a new one? Or would the money be better spent on a better exercise system in the basement including mats for the floor and perhaps a treadmill?
The details start to crowd my brain but it may be better to just focus on the snoring dog that has plastered hinself to my side and focus on packing the miscellaneous stuff I have accumulated over the years in the place and look at what I want to take with me.
And be thankful that I will only have one month of overlapping payments from one place to another. Because sometimes the details even work out in your favor.
